Event Overview

Further to Interim Dean Zwick’s July 23rd email announcing current initiatives to combat anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and foster diversity and inclusion at Schulich, I am pleased to confirm that, after having consulted with Student Services and the SCTE, York’s Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion will be delivering a series of anti-racism workshops for Schulich faculty and staff in the weeks ahead.

These workshops will provide unique opportunities to reflect upon our biases and intersectional identities, understand critical principles relating to addressing anti-Black and other forms of direct and systemic racism, and develop skills to address long-standing and emerging impacts on Black, Indigenous and racialized Peoples in the York community and beyond.

These workshops will be offered to both faculty and staff and will involve a combination of teaching modalities including whiteboarding, case studies, group discussions and breakout rooms.

All Schulich faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to participate in as many of these workshops as possible. The workshop series will be comprised of the following:

August 11
(2 to 3 pm)
Faculty & Staff
“ACKNOWLEDGING and ADDRESSING RACISM” Lecture & discussion
TOPICS: intersectionality; types of racism (including systemic racism); York’s racism policies and procedures; discrimination & harassment; white supremacy; impacts of racism; and skills development in combating racism.
August 17

“CHALLENGING UNCONSCIOUS BIAS and MICROAGGRESSIONS” Lecture & discussion
TOPICS: forms of unconscious bias; power & privilege; stereotyping leading to microaggressions and discriminatory behaviour; and effective strategies to challenge our biases, reframe our ways of thinking and enhance the experience of inclusion for all.

PLEASE NOTE that participation in at least one August workshop above is strongly recommended before participating in either or both of the September workshops below.

OVERVIEW: This session will focus on communications and interactions amongst staff, students and others in the context of Schulich’s administration. The first half of this session will enhance staff learning about addressing anti-Black, anti-Indigenous and other forms of racism, by engendering difficult discussions about race and privilege within ourselves and the people in our lives. It will also enable participants to challenge the assumptions they make about others, based on their own privileges and experiences.During the second half of this session, participants will be asked to design strategies and practice skills for use when intervening in moments of racial discrimination, harassment & microaggression.
